Rembrandt van Rijn has made effective oil painting, etching, and drawing work with masterful use of light and shadow. Numerous portraits and self-portraits that have survived until today have been the best indicator of the artist's talent and a reflection of that period.
He has worked on his own portrait with about eighty oil painting and engraving techniques. With the chronological follow-up of self-portraits, the transition from youth to old age and the mental state can be followed.
In these works, surprise, anger, shock, etc. experiments with different facial expressions. In some, Rembrandt portrays himself as a soldier, a noble or a saint, rarely as a model of a painter holding a palette or standing in front of a canvas.
These portraits, which can be described as the process of discovering various facial expressions and different artistic techniques, are the most important indicators of the artist's understanding of art that is changing day by day.
The self-portraits of the artist, from his youth until his death in 1669, constitute a unique autobiography.
